MSOC: Huskies and Lions fight to stalemate in Saint Charles

HCU faces league-leader SIUE on Saturday night

SAINT CHARLES, Mo. —- HCU started off the road swing with a hard-fought draw with Lindenwood on Thursday night, as the two clubs played to a 1-1 stalemate at Harlen C. Hunter Stadium.

All the scoring was done within the first 18 minutes, making it a defensive battle the rest of the way between two teams parked squarely in the middle of the OVC table just past the midway point of the conference race.

Lindenwood got on the board quickly, as in the fourth minute, Cooper Wilson secured a cross off a corner kick from Jens Herman-Haukeland, which resulted in a header into the back of the net.

The Huskies would answer, earning a corner kick of their own in the 18th minute. The incoming kick from the right corner found D'Alessandro Herrera, who leaped for a header. The ball glanced right off of Lindenwood's Mehki Wright and straight to an awaiting Kharrel Medza, whose left-footed blast nutmegged both Wright and Noe Bijou and past goalkeeper Enzo Gil, leveling things at one.

That would be that for the most part offensively for both squads on the night. The two teams would combine for just 13 total shots, with Lindenwood winning the shot battle 7-6, but the Huskies getting three more shots on target at 5-2.

Medza picked up his first goal of the campaign and just the second of his career with the brilliant equalizer in the first half. D'Alessandro Herrera picked up his sixth assist of the season, matching his total from last year. Alex Aitken returned to the net and garnered one save while facing just the seven shots on the night.

HCU sees its season ledger move to 3-5-5 and its conference mark go to 1-1-3, while Lindenwood goes to 5-4-4 overall and 2-1-2 in the league. The Huskies remain two points behind the Lions in fifth place overall in the league.

The Huskies will have a short turnaround, as they head to Edwardsville, Illinois for a Saturday night matchup against league-leading SIUE. The Cougars knocked off UIW 3-0 on Thursday night in a battle for the top spot, and remain unbeaten on the season at 9-0-3 overall and 4-0-1 in OVC play at the halfway point of conference action.
