COMMERCE, Texas – The HCU men's basketball team will look to rebound from a road loss to Northwestern State against an opponent they beat earlier this month, facing Texas A&M-Commerce in a Southland Conference rematch at the Field House on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
The Huskies (7-14, 4-4 SLC) fell at Northwestern State on Thursday on a tough night shooting while the Demons' Ja'Monta Black poured in 31 points. Senior center
Bonke Maring led the Huskies with 21 points in the loss.
The last time HCU and Texas A&M-Commerce (9-13, 5-3 SLC) met was on Thursday, Jan. 12, in Sharp Gym. The Huskies put up one of their best defensive performances of the season in the win, holding the Lions to just 59 points.
Brycen Long scored 21 points for HCU while
Maks Klanjscek added 19.
The Lions are coming off a road win against Lamar in Beaumont, Texas on Thursday, a game they won 62-57. Jerome Brewer Jr. led TAMUC with 12 points off the bench and Demarcus Demonia added 11. The Lions shot 47.6 percent from the floor in the win and took advantage of 10 made threes while holding the Cardinals to just four on their home court.
Tommie Lewis led the Lions when they last faced the Huskies, scoring 19 on 6-of-8 shooting. Demonia and Kalen Williams each scored 11. The HCU defense stymied the Lions, holding them to 38 percent (19-of-50) from the floor and just 26.1 percent (6-of-23) from three-point range.
Following Saturday's game, the Huskies will be back home for two, first against Northwestern State on Thursday, Feb. 2, before the season's first meeting with Nicholls on Saturday, Feb. 4. Both games are set to start at 7:00 p.m.
