HOUSTON – HBU men's basketball will take on the Southeastern Lions this Saturday evening in Sharp Gym in the team's annual throwback game, wearing the Hustlin' Husky 1970's uniforms with the blue and orange striped shots. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Garrett Jones and Van Chancellor on the call.
On Thursday, the Huskies (6-13, 2-4 SLC) had a back-and-forth affair against visiting Northwestern State with the Demons pulling away late to down HBU, 97-87. Sophomore
Brycen Long set a new career-high with six assists in the loss while
Darius Lee matched his career-high 30 in scoring. Lee previously scored 30 against the Demons last season in Sharp Gym. All five HBU starters scored at least 10 points.
In his last three games, junior center
Zach Iyeyemi has averaged 10.7 points per game and 6.3 rebounds. His 15 points in the Huskies' last game was a season-high. Iyeyemi is shooting 54 percent (34-of-63) from the floor for the season and for his career (116-of-215).
Southeastern (12-11, 4-2 SLC) comes into Saturday's game having won its last two games, including an 83-78 win at McNeese on Thursday. Keon Clergeot and Ryan Burkhardt led the way for the Lions with 17 points each with Gus Okafor adding 15. The Lions shot 50 percent (27-of-54) from the floor and 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from three in downing the Cowboys.
The Lions have been the top three-point shooting team in the league this season, connecting on 36.1 percent for the season. Burkhardt has been the team's top threat from deep, knocking down 58 threes this season and making them at a 43.3 percent clip. Okafor is the team's top scorer, averaging 14.2 ppg while Jalyn Hinton is adding 12.8 ppg and leading the way on the boards with 7.7 rpg.
The Huskies and Lions met in the opening round of the SLC Tip-Off Event with Southeastern holding a lead for the majority of the game and winning, 90-81. Okafor led all players with 25 points in the game while
Sam Hofman led HBU with a career-high 22 points.
The Huskies will run it back against Northwestern State and Southeastern next week, first visiting Natchitoches, La. on Thursday, Feb. 10, before continuing on to Hammond, La. on Saturday, Feb. 12.
