HOUSTON – The top four teams in the Southland Conference standings receive at least a first round bye in the conference tournament and on Saturday evening, HBU and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tip-off at 7:00 p.m. in Sharp Gym with the winner set to emerge alone in fourth place heading into the final week of the regular season. Garrett Jones and Van Chancellor will have the call on the ESPN+ broadcast.
The Huskies (9-15, 5-6 SLC) picked up an 82-68 win at home over UIW on Thursday with four different players scoring in double-figures and out-rebounding the Cardinals 36-23. In three games against UIW this season, HBU owns a rebounding margin of +9.3. The Huskies also forced 16 turnovers in the game and over the last six games have a turnover margin of +3.3.
Senior
Darius Lee continues to make his presence felt on both ends of the floor, particularly since conference play has begun. In SLC games, Lee ranks first in steals (3.5 spg), second in scoring (21.3 ppg), third in field goal percentage (54.1 percent), fourth in assists (3.5 apg), fourth in assist/turnover ratio (1.4), seventh in rebounding (7.2 rpg) and seventh in free throw percentage (82 percent).
Brycen Long is averaging 11.2 ppg in SLC play, shooting 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from three-point range and is fourth in the league with 1.4 spg.
Khristion Courseault, meanwhile, is averaging 9.9 ppg in conference play.
The Islanders (18-10, 5-6 SLC) have won their last two games, including a 65-53 win at McNeese on Thursday. TAMUCC shot 39.3 percent from the floor in the win and was led by San Antonio Brinson with 14 points off the bench.
Junior Isaac Mushila leads the Islanders with 14.5 ppg and has been among the best rebounders in the nation, averaging 9.9 rpg. That's the 14
th best mark in the country and he ranks fifth nationally on the offensive boards, pulling down 3.68 per game. For the season, TAMUCC has been the top rebounding team in the SLC with a +5.7 rebounding margin.
When the Huskies and Islanders met in January in Corpus Christi, HBU shot 48.1 percent to TAMUCC's 38.6 percent. Lee finished that game with 25 points, six steals, six assists and five rebounds while
Sam Hofman posted a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds. Mushila had 22 points and 17 rebounds for the Islanders.
HBU travels to New Orleans, La. to face the New Orleans Privateers on Wednesday, Mar. 2, at 7:00 p.m. before closing out the regular season with Senior Night at home in Sharp Gym against McNeese at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 5.
