THIBODAUX, La. –
Darius Lee finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season but HBU dropped a road Southland Conference matchup to the Nicholls Colonels, 84-70, on Saturday afternoon in Stopher Gymnasium.
The two teams traded buckets over the first four minutes of the game before Nicholls (18-9, 8-2 SLC) got out to a 10-6 lead after a Ty Gordon three-pointer.
Jade Tse converted an and-one to pull the Huskies (8-15, 4-6 SLC) back to within one, 10-9, at the 13:29 mark. The Colonels then went on a 16-4 run to push their lead to double-digits. After falling behind 28-14, HBU used an 11-4 run to get back to just seven down, 32-25, with 2:26 to go in the half but Nicholls closed out the half allowing the Huskies just one point in the final two minutes and led 41-26 at the break.
The Huskies used a 7-0 burst to trim their deficit back down to single-digits, trailing 48-39 less than five minutes in. A Gordon step back jumper put the Colonels up 54-43 but
Brycen Long answered with a three and a layup on consecutive possession to bring it to 54-48 with 11:30 left on the clock. Nicholls scored the next two before an and-one from
Darius Lee got it back to 58-51 but over the final nine minutes HBU was only able to get as close as nine as the Colonels pulled away down the stretch.
Lee finished with his fifth double-double of the season, leading the Huskies with 20 points and 10 rebounds. The senior was 8-of-13 from the floor and added three assists. Long finished the day with 16 points, knocking down 4-of-7 from three and 6-of-10 from the field. He also dished out a game-high five assists.
The Huskies shot 43.3 percent (26-of-60) from the floor as a team and 28.6 percent (6-of-21) from three. Nicholls, meanwhile, shot 53.3 percent (32-of-60) overall and 30.4 percent (7-of-23) from behind the arc. The Colonels owned a 38-32 advantage on the boards while both teams committed 13 turnovers.
Nicholls was led by the duo of Gordon and Latrell Jones who scored 28 and 25 points, respectively. Manny Littles added 12 for the Colonels.
HBU will return to Sharp Gym for its next two games, first hosting UIW on Thursday, Feb. 24, before taking on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday, Feb. 26, with both games set for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
