HOUSTON – HCU men's basketball will aim to break a five-game losing skid against Southwestern Adventist in a Sunday matinee matchup in Sharp Gym with tip-off set for 2:00 p.m. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.
The Huskies (1-7) boast three starters averaging better than 10 points per game led by junior
Brycen Long at 14.5 ppg. Long leads the Southland Conference with 24 made threes this season, a total that ranks 30
th in the nation. He now has 111 made threes in his career, good for 13
th on the program's all-time list and putting him 26 away from the top-ten.
Senior center
Bonke Maring is shooting 61.1 percent (44-of-72) from the field for the best mark in the league and is averaging 12.5 ppg. Fellow senior
Maks Klanjscek is the third Husky after double-figures, scoring 10.6 ppg. A pair of true freshman guards,
Pierce Bazil and
Andrew King, lead the team in assists with a combined 6.9 assists per game.
As a team, HCU ranks in the top-40 nationally in three-point percentage, connecting on 38.7 percent (74-of-191) from behind the arc.
Southwestern Adventist (0-5) is led in scoring by sophomore guard Alain Aviles with 13.5 ppg while fellow guard Ephraim Viadex is second with 12 ppg. Sophomore center Byron Fields is the Knights' top rebounded, pulling down seven rebounds per game while 5-10 guard Justin Lamb is second with 6.8 rpg.
HCU defeated the Knights 100-62 last season with
Deshon Proctor scoring 16 with 11 rebounds and Long adding 15 off the bench.
Sam Hofman scored 11 for the Huskies. HCU dominated the glass in that matchup, pulling down 60 rebounds to SWAU's 24.
