HOUSTON – HCU men's basketball starts its new year festivities early when the Huskies tip-off the 2022-23 Southland Conference portion of its schedule this Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. in Sharp Gym against the New Orleans Privateers. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with Garrett Jones on play-by-play and Van Chancellor providing color commentary.
HCU (3-10) dropped its last game ahead of the Christmas holiday, falling at Big 12 member Texas Tech on Dec. 21. Junior
Brycen Long led the Huskies with 21 points against the Red Raiders while
Bonke Maring added 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
The Huskies boast the top scoring offense in the Southland Conference, averaging 79.2 points per game and also have the best rebounding margin (+1 rebound per game) in the league. Long ranks fourth among SLC players in scoring, averaging 15.2 ppg with Maring checking in at eighth (14.5 ppg). Maring's 6.0 rpg is sixth-best in the conference and

Andrew King is tops among all league freshmen with 3.7 assists per game and a 1.6 assist/turnover ratio.
New Orleans (3-8) fell in its last game, also on Dec. 21, losing at No. 1 Purdue, 74-53. Jordan Johnson led UNO with 17 points and Tyson Jackson added 14.
Johnson, a junior guard, is averaging a team-best 15.1 ppg this season and is shooting 45.5 percent (30-of-66) from three-point range. He also leads the team with 37 assists. Khaleb Wilson-Rouse is second on the team with 11.3 ppg and Jackson averages 10.4 ppg and a team-best 4.5 rpg. As a team, the Privateers are shooting 42.3 percent from the floor and 35.6 percent from distance.
New Orleans won all three meetings between the two programs last season. The last time the Huskies and Privateers played was in New Orleans, La. on Mar. 2 with UNO making a second half comeback and eking out a 75-74 win.
Following Friday's game, the Huskies will hit the road for their next two games. First, HCU will play at Southeastern in Hammond, La. on Thursday, Jan. 5, before heading on to New Orleans for a rematch with the Privateers on Saturday, Jan. 7.
