SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – For the first time in more than 20 years the HCU men's basketball team will face the same opponent in back-to-back games when the Huskies play UT Rio Grande Valley this Sunday evening at the South Padre Island Convention Center for the Battle on the Beach. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.
The Huskies (3-8) and Vaqueros (7-4) played this past Saturday, Dec. 10, with UTRGV earning a 95-82 win over HCU. The last time HCU played the same team in back-to-back games was during the 2000-01, facing Southern Nazarene on Nov. 25 on the road followed by a neutral court matchup on Dec. 1. The Huskies are also scheduled for consecutive games against Southland Conference opponent Lamar on Feb. 16 and Feb. 18.
In the loss to the Vaqueros last weekend,
Brycen Long poured in 26 points, knocking down 6-of-11 from three-point range.
Bonke Maring added 18 points, had a team-high six rebounds and set a new career-high with three blocked shots. Freshman point guard
Andrew King finished with 14 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
UTRGV played Southwestern Christian on Thursday, Dec. 15, and picked up a 106-80 win. Senior Justin Johnson led all players with 31 points while Sherman Brashear scored 22 and Will Johnston ended the night with 19 points and seven assists.
HCU will travel to Lubbock, Texas following Sunday's matchup to face the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Wednesday, Dec. 21, afternoon at 1:00 p.m. for the team's final non-conference game of the season. Southland Conference play begins on Friday, Dec. 30, at 7:00 p.m. in Sharp Gym against the New Orleans Privateers.
