FB: HCU Falls at #7 UIW

Sophomore linebacker Rodney Dansby leads Huskies with 12 tackles

SAN ANTONIO – UIW quarterback Lindsey Scott Jr. threw seven first-half touchdowns as seventh-ranked UIW downed HCU, 73-20, in Southland Conference football Saturday afternoon at Benson Stadium. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.
 
Sophomore quarterback Justin Fomby completed 27-of-45 passes for 267 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions for HCU (2-7, 1-4 SLC). Junior Deon Cormier made eight catches for 65 yards and freshman Deuce McMillan had four catches for 56 yards. Sophomore Fudge Woods caught a 28-yard touchdown pass. Freshman Ismail Mahdi rushed for 87 yards and freshman Nate Livingston added a rushing touchdown.
 
Sophomore linebacker Rodney Dansby, who ranks second nationally in tackles, recorded 12 stops, while Caleb Flagg, Jalyx Hunt and D'ante Davis each had six tackles.
 
Scott, who leads the nation in touchdowns, went 15-for-20 for 319 yards and seven touchdowns for UIW (9-1, 4-1). Brandon Porter and Daron Chafin each had a pair of touchdown catches. Jaelin Campbell led the Cardinals with 78 receiving yards and a score. Marcus Cooper rushed for 79 yards and a touchdown.
 
Shawn Holton made 11 tackles and returned an interception 40 yards to set up a score for UIW. Kelechi Anyalebechi had five tackles and returned an interception 18 yards for a touchdown.
 
UIW had 520 yards of total offense, with 373 through the air, while HCU had 365 yards, including 275 passing. The Huskies turned the ball over four times, while the Cardinals turned it over once. UIW was penalized nine times for 85 yards and HCU was penalized three times for 26.
 
Scott threw for seven first half touchdowns, while HCU got a pair of field goals from Nery Enriquez as the score was 70-6 at halftime. Fomby threw a 28-yard touchdown to Woods and Livingston had a seven-yard touchdown run in the second half, while UIW was held to a field goal.
 
The Huskies return home to face McNeese on Senior Day and Military & First Responders Appreciation Day Saturday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m. at Husky Stadium.
