Game Notes

HOUSTON – The HCU men's basketball team hosts the University of Denver on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. in Sharp Gym to start a stretch of four consecutive home games. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.

HCU (1-6) fell at Missouri this past Saturday with freshman guard Andrew King having the best game of his young career, setting career-highs in points (13), assists (7), steals (4) and rebounds (4). As a team, the Huskies are shooting 46.2 percent from the floor, the best mark in the Southland Conference, and hitting 37.8 percent from three.

Denver (6-1) comes into Thursday's game having won its last four, including three games in three days at the Big Easy MTE hosted by New Orleans. The Pioneers defeated IUPUI, The Citadel and New Orleans in the tournament. Denver does the majority of its damage from the close range, ranking 12th in the nation in field goal percentage with a mark of 51.1 percent. The Pioneers also lead the nation in free throw attempts per game.

The Huskies and Pioneers met last season in Denver, Colo. with the Pioneers taking the win, 74-61. Zach Iyeyemi went 5-of-5 from the floor and finished with 11 points off the bench while Brycen Long added 10.

Thursday's game will be shown on ESPN+ with Garrett Jones and Van Chancellor teaming up to call the action.

HCU returns to the court on Sunday, Dec. 4, afternoon in Sharp Gym at 2:00 p.m. to face Southwestern Adventist.
