SAN ANTONIO - HCU travels to take on seventh-ranked UIW in a Southland Conference matchup Saturday at 2 p.m. at Benson Stadium. The Husky Sports Network audio broadcast with Garrett Jones will be available on hcuhuskies.com and will be shown on ESPN+. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.
 
Sophomore quarterback Justin Fomby has completed 194-of-325 passes for 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions for the Huskies (2-6, 1-3 SLC). Freshman running back Ismail Mahdi has rushed for 400 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 288 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Junior Vernon Harrell has 31 catches for 425 yards and two touchdowns and junior Karl Reynolds has 29 catches for 421 yards and five scores.
 
Sophomore linebacker Rodney Dansby leads the Southland and ranks second in the FCS with 11.9 tackles per game, while senior linebacker Brennan Young ranks third in the league and is tied for 13th nationally with 9.8 tackles per game. Junior linebacker Jalyx Hunt leads the conference in sacks per game with 7.0 total and 10.5 tackles for loss. Senior safety Coi Miller leads the league and has tied the school record with four interceptions.
 
Lindsey Scott Jr. has completed 201-of-272 passes for 3,090 yards, which ranks second nationally, and is tied for the FCS lead with 38 touchdowns and has four interceptions, while adding 271 rushing yards and six touchdowns for the Cardinals (8-1, 3-1).  Marcus Cooper has rushed for 711 yards and seven touchdowns. UIW has seven receivers with more than 150 yards, led by Taylor Grimes with 837 yards and 11 touchdowns and Darion Chafin with 783 yards and eight touchdowns.
 
Kelechi Anyalebechi has made 78 tackles, 7.5 for loss, and has recorded an interception and a fumble recovery for UIW. Kaleb Culp has added 52 stops, three pass breakup and forced a fumble. Chris Whittaker has 7.5 sacks and Steven Parker has 6.0. Donte Thompson has 12 pass breakups and Shawn Holton has a pair of interceptions.
 
UIW leads the all-time series against HCU, 6-0, with the Cardinals winning both meetings in 2021. The Huskies have previously faced a ranked opponent 14 times.
 
The Huskies will play their final home game and final conference game of the season against McNeese on Nov. 12, before wrapping up the year on the road with a non-conference tilt at Tarleton on Nov. 19.
