SAN ANTONIO, Texas – HBU men's basketball's three-game road swing to open Southland Conference play continues on Thursday night at the McDermott Center with a 7:30 p.m. matchup against the UIW Cardinals. HBU (4-10, 0-1 SLC) and UIW (4-14, 0-1 SLC) played less than two weeks ago on Jan. 8 at the Southland Conference Tip-Off with the Cardinals taking the 60-50 victory over the Huskies.
Zion Tordoff scored 12 points for the Huskies while
Deshon Proctor had 10 points and seven rebounds in the loss. HBU shot just 37.3 percent from the floor and 17.6 percent from three while UIW shot 40.7 percent as a team.
Over the last seven games, Tordoff has averaged 10.7 points per game and is now at 7.4 ppg for the season. During that seven-game stretch, the senior forward is shooting 61.7 percent from the field.
Darius Lee, meanwhile, continues to pace the team with 13.3 ppg and 8.9 rebounds per game. Lee is also shooting 57.1 percent from the field with enough attempts to qualify for national rankings and coming in with the 30
th-best field goal percentage in the nation.
This past Saturday, the Huskies dropped their conference-opener at McNeese, 78-75, on a last second three-pointer by the Cowboys. Lee led the team with 18 points and eight rebounds, connecting on 8-of-13 from the field. HBU shot 57.4 percent as a team in the loss.
The Cardinals also fell in their first SLC game on the road last weekend, losing to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by a score of 80-64. Senior guard RJ Glasper had his best offensive performance of the season, totaling 28 points and knocking down 6-of-11 from three.
Glasper is UIW's leading scorer for the season, averaging 15.4 ppg, while three other players are all averaging between 11 and 12 ppg. Johnny Hughes III, a senior forward, is the Cardinals' top rebounder with six rpg. As a team, UIW is third in the SLC in three-pointers made and attempts with nearly 45 percent of their field goal tries coming from outside the arc.
HBU has won eight of the last 11 meetings with the Cardinals, including the last three in San Antonio. Prior to the loss on Jan. 8, the Huskies had won four straight.
Following Thursday's game the Huskies will head south to Corpus Christi, Texas for a Saturday, Jan. 22, afternoon matinee against the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders inside the American Bank Center at 3:30 p.m.
