SB: Late Inning Steal Edges Bearkats Over HBU

Autumn Sydlik & Caitlyn Brockway knock back-to-back homers

HAMMOND, Louisiana – Sam Houston's Ellie Grill stole second base in the seventh inning and with an HBU error on the throw down, Grill was able to advance home as the Bearkats top the Huskies, 4-3 in an elimination game in the Southland Conference Tournament on Wednesday evening.

SLC All-Conference First Team senior catcher Heidi Jaquez led the lineup going 2-for-4 and scored once. Four other Huskies tabbed a hit for the team including sophomores Autumn Sydlik and Caitlyn Brockway who sailed back-to-back third inning home runs to tie the game at 2-2. Redshirt freshman Jasie Roberts knocked a hit down the right field line with a base hit to bring a run to tie the game at 3-3 in the fifth while senior Riley Bullen went 1-for-3.

Redshirt freshman Lyndie Swanson (9-3) took the loss in the circle giving up one run on one hit and walking three while striking out one in 4.0 innings thrown in relief. Senior Jessica Patak (8-10) threw the first three innings allowing three runs on three hits and walking three.

Sam Houston had four hits from four different Bearkats. Kyndal Kutac went 1-for-4 driving in two runs in a first inning homer while Katye Martinez tabbed a sacrifice fly for a fourth inning 3-2 lead. Grill went 1-for-3, stealing second after a walk and advancing to home on the error.

Regan Dunn (8-11) nabbed the win for the tournament advancement in relief allowing one run on two hits with a pair of walks while striking out two in the final three innings. Mika Vento started the game giving up two runs on four hits and walked three while striking out a pair.

Huskies finished the season with an overall record of 22-17 and a conference record of 15-12, making it to the Southland Conference Tournament for the first time since 2014. HBU Softball graduates six seniors: Heidi Jaquez, Jessica Patak, Elliott Estes, Riley Bullen, Sierra Humphrey, and Kamryn Parker.
