CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – With the match tied at a set apiece, fifth-seeded HBU dropped a heartbreaking third set and fourth-seeded host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi went on to a 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-23, 25-19) victory in the quarterfinals of the Southland Conference Tournament Thursday night in Dugan Wellness Center.
Sophomore right side
Anna Gadway recorded a double-double with 10 kills, 11 digs and five blocks for the Huskies, while senior outside hitter
Mikayla Vivens also had 10 kills with nine digs. Junior middle blockers
Ebonie Ballesteros and
Jada Allen each had nine kills, with Ballesteros posting four blocks and Allen three. Redshirt freshman outside hitter
Reagan Leinen added seven kills. Sophomore setter
Ellie Wipf had 41 assists and eight digs, redshirt freshman libero
Kaley Feris had 22 digs.
Chloe Simon led the Islanders with 15 kills and nine digs and Faith Panhans had 40 assists, nine kills, seven digs and three blocks. Rachel Young and Hannah Froeschl each had nine kills. Carissa Barnes led TAMU-CC with 18 digs and Kaylee Payne had 10.
TAMU-CC hit .236 for the match, with HBU hitting .170. The Huskies outdug the Islanders, 63-61, and outblocked them, 8-7, but TAMU-CC had seven aces to HBU's four.
The Huskies finish the season 9-10 overall and return all but one student-athlete from the spring roster in the fall.
