KATY, Texas – On Tuesday night inside the Merrell Center the HBU men's basketball team faces the task of trying to defeat a team three times in one season when the No. 10 seed Huskies face seventh-seeded UIW at 8:00 p.m. on the first night of the 2021 Hercules Tires Southland Tournament. HBU (5-18, 4-11 SLC) makes its return to the Southland Tournament as the 10 seed after missing out last season. The Huskies draw a familiar opponent in a UIW (8-13, 5-9 SLC) team they already played twice this season, most recently this past Wednesday, Mar. 3.
In the first meeting between the two teams this season in San Antonio on Jan. 27 the Huskies never trailed and rolled to a 73-57 win. Then, in the Mar. 3 game in Sharp Gym it was a tighter affair with the Cardinals leading by one with 2:21 to go before HBU pulled back ahead and won by five, 72-67. In those two games, the Huskies have compiled a +23 margin in rebounds.
The Huskies have won the last three meetings between the two teams and have won seven of the last nine in the all-time series.
HBU is led by junior
Pedro Castro who in conference play has averaged 15.2 points per game while shooting 49.1 percent (83-of-169) from the floor and 47 percent (31-of-66) from three. Additionally, he has averaged 7.4 rebounds per game and 1.1 blocked shots per game against SLC competition.
The Cardinals' roster is headlined by sophomore Keaston Willis who is averaging 18.9 ppg this season as a 42.9 percent (118-of-275) shooter overall with a mark of 38.8 percent (40-of-103) from beyond the arc. He is the lone UIW player averaging double-figures in scoring while sophomore Marcus Larsson has been the team's top rebounder, averaging seven boards per game.
With a win, the Huskies will be back at it on Wednesday, Mar. 10, at 8:00 p.m. against the sixth-seeded Lamar Cardinals.
