HOUSTON – HBU dropped its regular season finale on Wednesday night to visiting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 94-70, in Sharp Gym after clinching a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament earlier in the day.

The Huskies (5-18, 4-11 SLC) clinched a spot in the tournament after Central Arkansas lost at Northwestern State in the first SLC game of the day. HBU will be the No. 10 seed in the tournament and will play UIW at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 9.

TAMUCC (5-19, 2-13 SLC) took advantage of a poor offensive start from the Huskies and raced out to a 25-4 lead just over 10 minutes into the game. The Islanders pushed their lead as high as 28 in the first quarter with HBU getting it back to 24 at the half, 48-24. The Huskies came out in the second half and opened things up with an 11-3 run to bring it to 51-35. TAMUCC again went up by more than 20 with HBU cutting it to16 one more time but getting no closer.

Pedro Castro led all players with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting and connected on 4-of-6 from three-point range. Freshman Za-Ontay Boothman added 14 points off the bench, hitting on 6-of-12 from the floor and fellow frosh Brycen Long added 12 with three assists.

HBU shot 37.5 percent (24-of-64) from the field and 33.3 percent (11-of-33) from three. The Islanders finished the evening shooting 51.4 percent (37-of-72) overall and 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from deep. TAMUCC held a 47-31 advantage on the boards and a 13-17 advantage in turnovers.

The SLC Tournament begins Tuesday and if the Huskies win, they will play the following day with games all set for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off until the championship game which is scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 13, at 8:30 p.m.
