NACOGDOCHES – HBU struggled to find momentum in the first set and although getting close in the second set, SFA went up 2-0. The Huskies fought back to rob the sweep to take the third set, but SFA claimed the close fourth set victory for the 3-1 win and claim Southland Conference Regular Season Champions outright.
Senior outside hitter Mikayla Vivens led the Huskies (9-9,8-4 SLC) recording a double-double with 16 kills and 12 digs. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Reagan Leinen had nine kills, while Junior middle blocker Jada Allen had seven kills and two blocks and junior middle blocker Ebonie Ballesteros had six kills and five blocks. Sophomore right side Anna Gadway added eight kills and 15 digs with three blocks and sophomore setter Ellie Wipf posted 42 assists, 12 digs and three blocks. Redshirt freshman libero Kaley Feris posted 18 digs and two aces while freshman defensive specialist Madeline McKinney had 15 digs.
Payton Cerny led SFA (23-5,11-1 SLC) hitting a .462 with 16 kills. Kennedy Wright posted a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs while Leah Powell had eight kills. Ariana Pagan posted seven kills with nine digs and three aces, while Taya Mitchell had four kills and six blocks. Maddy Bourque posted 29 assists and five digs while Maddie Miller had 31 digs, just two away from her season high.
SFA hit .219 for the match and HBU hit .146. Both teams posted 75 digs and five aces while SFA outblocked the Huskies 18-14.
SFA began the game with a 7-0 run having control of the entire first holding the Huskies to a -.103 hitting percentage and only five kills to SFA's 12. The Huskies came out the second set with a fight trading back and forth points with the Lumberjacks with a service ace from Vivens to tie the set 22-22. With two SFA kills and an HBU hitting error, SFA took the set 25-22.
SFA took control of the start of the third set with the momentum for a 12-7 lead. The Jacks went outscored the Huskies 5-2 and a kill from Wright put them up 17-9. With a service error from SFA to put the score at 21-14, HBU went on an 8-0 run to take the lead by one. SFA tied it at 22 with a kill, but with a Gadway kill and an SFA error, Vivens nailed a kill to keep the Huskies from the sweep.
Starting the fourth with the momentum again, a kill from Pagan put SFA up 12-7. SFA kept control, but a 5-0 from HBU kept them crawling back in. A kill from Leinen tied the game at 22 and although Wright posted a kill for the lead, a Ballesteros kill tied it once more. With two HBU hitting errors, the Lumberjacks claimed the victory and their sole title of the Southland Conference Regular Season Champions.
The Huskies will see action next in Corpus Christi, Texas as they begin the 2021 Southland Conference Tournament beginning Wednesday, March 31.
