HOUSTON – HBU men's basketball aims to make it a season sweep of the UIW Cardinals and maintain positioning to qualify for the 2021 Southland Conference Men's Basketball Tournament when the two teams meet on the court in Sharp Gym on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. Husky fans can catch all the action on the Husky Sports Network broadcast with Lonnie King providing play-by-play available at HBUHuskies.com.
The Huskies (4-17, 3-10 SLC) never trailed in a 73-57 win over the Cardinals (8-10, 5-7 SLC) as HBU shot 46.4 percent from the field and out-rebounded UIW 39-31.
Darius Lee led the Huskies with 19 points off the bench while
Pedro Castro and
Brycen Long finished with 14 and 10, respectively. The HBU defense held the Cardinals to their second-worst shooting performance of the season in conference play, connecting on just 38.6 percent from the floor.
HBU continues to be led by Castro who is averaging 13.9 points per game and seven rebounds per game. The junior also has recorded a team-high 28 steals and 24 blocked shots. Freshman
Jade Tse has dished out a team-high 63 assists.
The Cardinals are led by sophomore Keaston Willis who is averaging 19.2 ppg and shooting nearly 40 percent from beyond the arc. The team's top rebounder, Marcus Larsson, averages seven rpg but went down with an injury two minutes into UIW's game on Monday.
Looking at the SLC points system determining seeding this season, HBU has an opportunity to clinch a spot in the tournament with a win on Wednesday and a loss by Central Arkansas. The Huskies stand at 10 points with the Bears right behind with nine.
HBU will wrap up the 2020-21 regular season on Saturday, Mar 6, evening with Senior Night and a 5:00 p.m. tip-off against Texas A&M-Corpus Christ in Sharp Gym.
