HOUSTON – HBU senior outside hitter
Mikayla Vivens reached 1,000 career kills, becoming the sixth member of the Huskies' 1,000 Kill-1,000 Dig Club, in a 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 20-25, 25-21) victory over Central Arkansas Saturday afternoon in Sharp Gym.
Vivens posted a double-double with 15 kills and 14 digs, totaling 1,010 kills and 1,016 digs now for her career. She joins Elele Ekadeli, Jessica Barrera, Heather Leaverton, Jessica Wooten and Bailey Banks on the all-time list.
Redshirt freshman outside hitter
Reagan Leinen led HBU (6-2 SLC) with career-high 17 kills, while junior middle blocker
Jada Allen had 12 and added four blocks and an ace. Sophomore right side
Anna Gadway had seven kills, 10 digs and five blocks and junior middle blocker
Ebonie Ballesteros also had five rejections. Sophomore setter
Ellie Wipf handed out 44 assists and had 10 digs, while redshirt freshman libero
Kaley Feris had 15 digs and freshman defensive specialist
Madeline McKinney had 13. Senior setter
Morgan Dewyer served up three aces.
Alexis Stumbough recorded 20 kills and 16 digs for UCA (5-3 SLC), while Charlie Tidwell had 13 kills and five blocks. Madi Bowles had eight kills, Sarah Strus had six and Amanda Beaton was held to five. Ravin Rhodes had five blocks for the Sugar Bears. Bailey Waddington had 28 assists and 10 digs and Emily Doss led UCA defensively with 17 digs.
HBU hit .205 for the match and held UCA to .165. The Sugar Bears outdug the Huskies, 78-66, but HBU outblocked UCA, 11-8, and outaced them, 6-3.
In the first set, HBU scored three-straight points to extend a one point lead to three at 11-7. After UCA closed within a point, HBU once again answered with three more. With the set tied, 20-20, the Huskies scored three-straight points, then Allen closed out the 25-22 win with a kill.
The Huskies fell behind 11-8 in the second, but scored four in a row to go up by one. Neither team led by more than point until HBU scored four-straight points, including three-straight kills by Vivens to take a 21-18 lead. Allen once again finished off the set with a kill for the 25-21 decision.
The third set was tied, 17-17, but Tidwell and Amari Mitchell teamed up for a block to set off seven-straight points by the Sugar Bears. The Huskies fought off a couple of set points, before Stumbough got UCA back in the match with a kill for a 25-20 win.
HBU scored four of the first five points in the fourth and never trailed. With the Huskies leading 12-11, they scored four-straight to go up, 16-11. Lexie Gregory's ace pulled UCA with two at 18-16, but HBU answered with the next three to once again lead by five. The Sugar Bears fought back to 23-21, but Vivens had a kill to get to set point, then Allen closed the door on the 25-21 victory.
The Huskies return to action when they hit the road to face Southeastern Louisiana Thursday in Hammond, followed by Lamar Saturday in Beaumont.
