MSOC: Huskies Lose Late to San Jose State

Senior Day is at Sorrels Field Saturday at 7 p.m.

San Jose, California – The HBU men's soccer team lost a heartbreaking Western Athletic Conference match against San Jose State at Spartan Soccer Field Friday evening.

The Huskies (3-14-0, 1-9-0 WAC) got on the board early in the 13th minute when Abu Kamara found a streaking Bryant Farkarlun in the box for the goal. Farkarlun's goal brings his yearly total to five which tied CJ Smith for the team lead. Unfortunately for the Huskies, just two minutes later the Spartans (9-5-3, 7-1-2 WAC) were able to even things at one a piece when Casper Poulsgaard on a ball sent into the box by Max Allen which was touched by Rudi Castro. The Huskies nearly took the lead in the 31st minute when Bangelee Sesay sent at shot towards the bottom left corner of the goal, but a diving Spartan keeper was able to keep the Huskies off the board for a second time.

The Huskies kept pushing the tempo and were able to regain the lead in the 40th minute off of a corner kick. Shots by Farkarlun and Nathan Karmbor were both blocked by the keeper before Sebastian Cochrane was able to send one into the back of the net, his third of the season, and extending the lead to 2-1. The Spartans showed again that they knew how to respond by scoring just over a minute later. In the 42nd minute Miguel Bermudez beat a Husky defender and sent his shot past a diving JP Beccera to even the match at two. The teams would take this tie into halftime.

The Huskies continued the pressure into the start of the second half as Cochrane nearly got on the scoreboard again in the 49th minute which was saved by the San Jose State keeper. The script flipped starting in the 54th minute when the Spartans sent in nine shots in just over five minutes, but the Husky defense was able to stand strong and keep the Spartans off the board.

In the 61st minute it was Farkarlun who almost got on the board for a second time in the match, when he sent a shot at the keeper which was saved. On an attack in the 63rd minute, San Jose State's Rudi Castro beat several Husky defenders and put a shot into the net to take the lead for the Spartans, 3-2. Neither team was able to get a shot on goal for the rest of the match.

For the match, San Jose State led HBU in total shots and shots on goal, 25(7)-14(6), while the Huskies led in corner kick chances 7-5. Husky goalkeeper Becerra and Spartan goalkeeper Eric Waltz both had four saves on the night.

The Huskies return to Sorrels Field for Senior Day next Saturday when they host new WAC member Chicago State in the school's first ever meeting with HBU at 7 p.m.
