HOUSTON – The HBU Huskies (12-10,1-2 SLC) dropped Saturday's series finale against the Nicholls Colonels (12-14, 2-1 SLC), 4-3.
The Nicholls Colonels got off to an early start in the first inning leading off the game with back to back hits by the leadoff and second batter followed by a sac bunt that advanced both runners into scoring position. Herbert for the Colonels reached on an error to the shortstop that allow Nicholls to take a one run lead, the runner advanced to third on the play. The next batter hit a sac fly to left field that scored another Colonels run giving them an early 2-0 run lead.
Nicholls tacked on two more runs in the top of the second after a single and a homerun off Huskies start Venker giving the Colonels a 4-0 lead over the Huskies.
HBU's offense went silent for the next three innings spreading out three hits not being able to push a run across off of Colonels pitcher Jordan Moon who won the second game of the double header the night before.
The Huskies offense surged in the bottom of the fifth after
Shelby Echols reached on a bunt single followed by a line drive homerun to left center by
Jasie Roberts that scraped the wall decreasing the Colonels lead to 4-2.
The Colonels offense was shut down by Freshman pitcher
Lyndie Swanson who relieved Venker after she gave up the homerun in the second inning.
HBU threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning but fell short leaving three runners on base to end the inning.
In the bottom of the of the seventh inning the Colonels were leading by two until
Caitlyn Brockway led off the inning with a solo shot over the left center fence on a 2-2 count to bring the Huskies within one run. Sophomore
Autumn Sydlik singled to left with one out,
Haley Melton pinch ran for Sydlik. The next two Huskies could not come through dropping game three to give Nicholls the series 2-1.
HBU returns to play next Saturday on the road in Hammond, Louisiana against the Southeastern Louisiana Lions in the second Southland Conference series of the season.
