HOUSTON – HBU volleyball opens the 2019 season by hosting Bethune-Cookman, Radford and UT Rio Grande Valley in the Barcelona Sports Invitational Friday and Saturday in Sharp Gym.
The Huskies return 12 letterwinners, including four starters, their starting libero and a pair of seniors from last year's squad, which finished 16-16 overall, tied for fifth in the Southland Conference with an 8-8 record and advanced to the tournament semifinals.
Junior outside hitter
Mikayla Vivens was a first-team all-conference selection, made the all-tournament team and led the league in double-doubles. She was joined on the preseason all-conference team by junior middle blocker
Megan Patillo and sophomore outside hitter
Kelly Colwell. HBU also returns starters in junior right side
Ashtyn Richey and senior libero
Hannah Lewis.
BCU has been picked to tie for first in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and are led by preseason all-conference pick junior outside hitter Jordan Jefferson.
Radford has been picked second in the Big South preseason poll and is led by preseason all-conference selections in senior middle blocker Mallory McKnight and senior right side Stephanie Neast.
UTRGV is the defending Western Athletic Conference champion, but has been picked to tie for fourth this season. UTRGV is led by senior right side Barbara Silva, a preseason all-WAC selection.
HBU opens with Bethune-Cookman Friday at 12:30 p.m., followed by Radford at 6:30. The Huskies wrap up the tournament against UTRGV Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Radford and UTRGV get the tournament rolling with a 10 a.m. matchup Friday, then Bethune-Cookman faces UTRGV at 4 p.m. Radford and Bethune-Cookman play Saturday at Noon.
