FB: UIW Holds Off #25 HBU, 38-36

Sophomore WR Jerreth Sterns makes school-record 18 catches for 136 yards, TD



HOUSTON - No. 25 HBU scored a touchdown with 3:14 left in the game, but UIW thwarted the two-point conversion and ran out the clock to snap the Huskies' four-game winning streak with a 38-36 victory in Southland Conference football Saturday night at Husky Stadium.

Junior quarterback Bailey Zappe completed 49-of-69 passes for 390 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions, setting school records for completions and attempts, for the Huskies (4-2, 1-1 SLC). Sophomore receiver Jerreth Sterns made a school-record 18 receptions for 136 yards and a touchdown, while Gamar Girdy Brito caught seven passes for 53 yards and a touchdown and returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Junior Ben Ratzlaff caught six passes for 45 yards and a score. Sophomore running back Ean Beek rushed 20 times for 96 yards.

Sophomore linebacker Brennan Young led HBU with 12 tackles, while senior defensive back Malik Johnson made 11 tackles, forced and recovered a fumble. Junior safety Patrick Wolfe also had 11 stops and senior defensive end Andre Walker recorded a sack, giving him 9.5 for the season. Freshman kicker Gino Garcia tied the single-game school record with three made field goals.

Jon Copeland completed 33-of-44 passes for 342 yards and three touchdowns for the Cardinals (3-2, 2-1). Kevin Brown rushed 11 times for 104 yards and Kam Williams made nine catches for 101 yards and a touchdown.

Jacob Harper made 12 tackles for UIW and Tre Richards had 11. Louis Otis posted nine tackles and made an interception, while Jaylon Jimmerson had the other pick for the Cardinals.

UIW took the opening kickoff and marched down the field for the first score of the game, a 32-yard touchdown pass from Copeland to Lamont Johnson. HBU immediately answered as Girdy Brito returned the kickoff the distance for an 87-yard touchdown.

Mark Sullivan hauled in a 31-yard touchdown pass from Copeland to give the Cardinals a 14-7 lead with just under nine minutes remaining in the first quarter. Early in the second quarter, Garcia hit a 49-yard field goal for the Huskies to make the score 14-10 with 13:39 to go in the half. UIW answered with Perez capping an 11-play, 65-yard drive with a six-yard touchdown run.

HBU went on its longest drive of the season, covering 65 yards in 15 plays and taking 6:08 off the clock, when Zappe hit Ratzlaff for an eight-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 21-17. UIW quickly responded with a nine-play, 75-yard drive in 2:24, capped by Keyondrick Philio's two-yard touchdown run, as the Cardinals went up 28-17 with 1:43 remaining. HBU drove back into the red zone, but settled for Garcia's 26-yard field goal as the Cardinals took a 28-20 lead into halftime.

The Huskies took the kickoff in the second half and Garcia made a 32-yard field goal to make the score 28-23 with 10:50 remaining in the third. Copeland then threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Williams as the Cardinals moved ahead, 35-23, with 6:55 to go in the quarter. HBU needed less than two minutes to strike back as Sterns' 38-yard reception, set up his six-yard touchdown catch from Zappe as UIW led, 35-30. Carson Mohr made a 31-yard field goal to put the Cardinals back up by eight with 2:37 on the clock in the third, which would be the last score of the night for UIW.

HBU was driving in the fourth, but Zappe was intercepted by Jimmerson in the back of the end zone with 9:09 left in the game. The Huskies got the ball back and Zappe found Girdy Brito for a 17-yard touchdown reception, but the pass to Ratzlaff on the two-point try was incomplete.

The Huskies return to action when they face Abilene Christian Saturday, Oct. 12 at Wildcat Stadium in Abilene, Texas.
