VB: HBU Rally Comes Up Short at SHSU

Sophomore outside hitter Kelly Colwell records double-double with 19 kills, 22 digs



HUNTSVILLE, Texas - After dropping the first two sets, HBU bounced back to even the match and send it to a fifth set, but Sam Houston State held off the Huskies to escape with a 3-2 (25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 22-25, 15-13) victory in Southland Conference volleyball Thursday night in Johnson Coliseum.

Sophomore outside hitter Kelly Colwell posted career highs of 19 kills and 22 digs, while junior outside hitter Mikayla Vivens also double-doubled with 13 kills and 23 digs for the Huskies (10-10, 2-3 SLC). Junior right side Ashtyn Richey added 16 kills and eight digs, while sophomore middle blocker Ebonie Ballesteros had 10 kills and eight blocks. Junior middle blocker Megan Patillo posted six kills and five blocks. Junior setter Morgan Dewyer tallied 54 assists, 18 digs, six kills and six blocks. Senior libero Hannah Lewis came up with 19 digs and senior defensive specialist Camie Copeland had 16.

Ashley Lewis led the Bearkats (9-8, 5-0) with 19 kills and 17 digs, while Catherine Krieger had 14 kills and Breanne Chausse had nine kills and six blocks. Kaira Hunnicutt added six kills and seven blocks. Madilyn Miles recorded 22 assists and 14 digs and Morgan Janda had 18 assists and eight digs. Addison Miller had 37 digs and Ashleigh Traylor had 13.

HBU hit .180 for the match and SHSU hit .131. The Huskies outdug the Bearkats, 113-98, and each team had 14 blocks. The difference in the match came from the service line, where HBU had four aces and 12 service errors, while SHSU had seven aces and only four service errors.

The Huskies trailed 14-8, facing match point in the fifth set, but reeled off five-straight points to put a scare into the Bearkats before Lewis closed out the match with a kill.

In the fourth set, SHSU had a 22-18 lead, but HBU ended the set by scoring the final seven points to force the fifth.

The Huskies return to action when they face McNeese Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
