DALLAS, Texas – On Friday evening at Westcott Field, HBU's men's soccer team dealt with a weather delay and got a pair of first half goals from freshman
Nick Coburn en route to a 3-1 road win over SMU.
Coburn got an early attempt during the second minute that missed high for the Huskies (2-2-2) but the offense was all SMU (2-3-1) for the next 20 minutes as the Mustangs attempted eight shots during that span with three on goal while HBU didn't get a shot off. That changed during the 29
th minute when
Dominick Faletto's shot was stopped but Coburn was there to knock home the rebound and put the Huskies ahead by one. Less than five minutes later, Coburn had a shot stopped by SMU's Grant Makela but scored off his own rebound to send the Huskies into the half ahead 2-0.
It took some time for both teams to get going in the second period and in the 58
th minute, SMU's Akean Shackleford saw his shot hit the post. The Mustangs got on the board at the 68:04 mark when a free kick from Emil Cuello found DJ Williams who was able to finish and get SMU within one. As the game wound down to the final 10 minutes, Shackleford put a header on target but
Jorge Cabrera was up to the task, making the save and preserving the lead. In the 86
th minute, Faletto took a pass from Coburn, dribbled through the box and around Makela before netting his first goal of the season and the insurance goal to put the match away.
HBU was 0-4-1 all-time against SMU prior to Friday's game, giving the Huskies their first win over the Mustangs in program history. SMU started the season ranked No. 8 in the nation.
Coburn's two goals came on four shots, with three of those on goal. With the assist on Faletto's goal, that gave his five points on the night. Faletto's goal and assist were his first points of the 2018 season. In goal, Cabrera came up with four saves while the HBU defense added a pair of team saves to pick up the win.
SMU held a 26-to-13 advantage in shots while the Mustangs put seven attempts on goal to the Huskies' six. Corner kicks were 9-to-4 in SMU's favor.
Friday's match was the Huskies' final non-conference game of the season with Western Athletic Conference play starting up on Saturday, Sep. 22, at Sorrels Field when they take on Utah Valley at 7:00 p.m.
