VB: Huskies Outlast Incarnate Word In Five Sets

Sophomore outside hitter Mikayla Vivens records double-double for HBU

HOUSTON- HBU Battled with Incarnate Word to five sets and the Huskies come out on top, 3-2 (21-25, 25-18, 27-28, 25-19, 15-8), Saturday in a Southland Conference matchup in Sharp, Gym.
 
Sophomore middle blocker Megan Patillo led the Huskies (9-10), with 6 blocks and 13 kills. Sophomore Outside hitter Mikayla Vivens recorded another double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs, while senior middle blocker Kayla Davenport added 8 kills and 4 blocks. Freshman outside hitter chipped in 7 kills with 4 digs and Senior setter Madison O' Brien dished out 34 assists with 10 digs, 4 kills, and 4 blocks. Junior libero Hannah Lewis led the Huskies with 21 digs adding 6 assists as well.
Autumn Lockley led Incarnate Word (4-13) with 17 kills and 6 digs and Bethany Clapp had 13 kills and 9 digs. Julia Monday added 12 kills and Maddie Slaughter had 6 kills and 7 blocks. Madelynn Miller led all players with 39 digs.
 
HBU hit .146. with Incarnate Word hitting .161. The Cardinals out blocked the Huskies 20-16. The Huskies slightly outdug the Cardinals 71-70 and HBU had 9 service aces to Incarnate Words 5.
The first set was back and forth with no team getting more than a three-point lead. With the score 19-17 Incarnate leading, the Huskies rolled off four-straight points, that led to an Incarnate Word timeout. Following the timeout, the Cardinals ripped off six-straight points capitalized by a kill by Lockley and two back to back services aces from Madelynn Miller to seal the first set 25-21.

The second set was close like the first, but both teams made impressive runs in the early going. HBU with the score 2-1 Incarnate Word leading the Huskies put together five points from two kills by Megan Patillo and two errors on the Cardinals. The Cardinals answered back four-straight points of their own from two Autumn Lockley kills. Later in the set the score was 18-13 with HBU leading where the Huskies score four-straight to take a commanding lead. The Cardinals fought back, but eventually dropped the set 25-18.
The third set was much like the first two with both teams making runs keeping the game close. The Huskies had a run of six-straight points while the Cardinals put together two streaks of four points. With the score knotted up at 24-24 the two teams alternated points once before HBU put two-straight points together to take the set 27-25.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 14-11 lead before they began to take over the set by a score of 22-13 after a Maddie Slaughter kill. The Huskies tried to answer back by scoring four-straight points, but could not hold off the attack of Incarnate Word and dropped the set 25-19.

HBU led the fifth set with four-straight points forcing a quick timeout from Incarnate Word. HBU extended this lead to 8-2 following a service ace from Madison O' Brien. Incarnate Word fought to get the score to 9-7 with the Huskies leading until HBU took over. The Huskies scored six out of the last seven to take the set 15-8 and the match 3-2.

The Huskies follow this match with a three-game road trip against Abilene Christian, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and Sam Houston State. The Huskies then return home to Sharp Gym to face McNeese Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
