HOUSTON – On Sunday afternoon at Clay Stadium on the campus of Strake Jesuit College Prep, the HBU men's soccer team took a hard-luck 1-0 loss to visiting UNLV in WAC play.
UNLV (9-7-1, 4-3-1 WAC) was on the offensive early, seeing a few good looks go wide and then, in the 11
th minute, a header by Marco Gonzalez from point-blank range was stopped by
Jorge Cabrera. At the 1546 mark,
Dominick Faletto had an attempt past the keeper for HBU (4-6-3, 2-4-1 WAC) but a UNLV defender was there to clear the ball out and keep it from the net. In the 22
nd minute, it was Faletto again who had an attempt from the top of the 18-yard box saved by a fully out-stretched Nathan Bohn. The Rebels got their goal in the final minute of the first period with Jesus Partida getting assists from Ivan Lopez and John Lynam.
The Huskies got some more chances in the second half, including a pair within a two-minute span with
Josue Palomino and
Thomas Menke both getting denied by Bohn prior to the 60
th minute. The Huskies put three shots on goal in the second half while Cabrera made a pair of saves.
For HBU, Cabrera totaled four saves while his counterpart, Bohn, finished with six. Menke, Faletto and GIanluca Natera all put two shot attempts on goal for the Huskies. Shots were even at 16 a piece while the Huskies owned a 6-to-5 advantage in corner kicks.
HBU hits the road for a three-game swing beginning next weekend with visits to CSU Bakersfield on Friday, Oct. 26, and California Baptist on Sunday, Oct. 28.
