LAS VEGAS, Nev. – On Thursday evening, HBU will open Western Athletic Conference play against preseason favorite UNLV in men's soccer action at Peter Johann Memorial Field with kickoff set for 9:00 p.m. CST before heading on to Phoenix to take on Grand Canyon on Sunday.
After a disrupted start to the season that saw one tournament canceled due to a hurricane and another trip altered due to an impending hurricane, the Huskies have settled into the season and enter conference play with a 3-2-0 record and ranked ninth in the West Region in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll.
Sophomore
Malik Key leads HBU with two goals, including the game-winner in the Huskies' last game, a 1-0 win at Incarnate Word.
Dominick Faletto is tied with Key with four points on the season, having scored one goal and dished out a pair of assists. The Huskies have held opponents to just four goals in five matches this season with three goalkeepers,
Harrison Veith,
Chance Pope and
Jorge Cabrera, combining for a 0.77 goals against average and a .875 save percentage.
UNLV, sporting a 3-6-0 record, is led by preseason All-America selection Danny Musovski. Musovski picked up national player of the week honors on Tuesday after a four-goal, nine-point performance in the Rebels' 5-1 victory over Oral Roberts last weekend. Musovski, a senior, leads UNLV with five goals and two assists for 12 points in just five matches. Enrique Adame, a redshirt-sophomore, is 3-5-0 in goal with a 1.21 goals against average and a save percentage of .722.
As a team, the Rebels have been out-scored 13-11 for the season. HBU is 1-5-0 all-time against UNLV, falling 1-0 at Sorrels Field last season.
The Lopes will enter Sunday's matchup with a 3-5-0 season record, including a 3-1-0 mark on their home field. For the season, GCU is averaging 1.50 goals while ceding two goals per match to opponents. Grand Canyon won its most recent matchup, on Sep. 22, over Oral Roberts in overtime by a score of 1-0.
Damian German, a junior, is the Lopes leading scorer with four goals and nine total points. German netted a hat trick in a 5-4 overtime win against UC Riverside on Sep. 14. Senior Niki Jackson is second on the team with seven points on three goals and one assist. Jeremy Pollard and Corey Marques have split time in goal with Pollard picking up WAC defensive player of the week honors for his shutout of ORU. The two have combined for a .652 save percentage on the year.
The Huskies will play their delayed home opener on Thursday, Oct. 5, when they host UMKC at Sorrels Field.
