ARLINGTON, Texas – HBU will compete in the UTA Maverick Volleyball Classic this weekend in its final tuneup before beginning Southland Conference play. The Huskies face UC Davis at 2:30 p.m., followed by host UT Arlington at 7 p.m. Friday, then wrap up the weekend against Arizona State Saturday at 10 a.m.
The Huskies (7-2) have lost two straight, after beginning the season with a seven-match winning streak. HBU is led by its dynamic duo of senior outside hitters
Bailey Banks and
Jessica Wooten, with Banks averaging 3.36 kills and 3.67 digs per set and Wooten averaging 3.21 digs and 3.85 digs per set. Senior middle blocker
Blair Gillard ranks second in the league with 1.28 blocks per set and junior middle blocker
Kayla Davenport ranks fourth with a .358 hitting percentage. Freshman setter
Abby Gargus ranks second in the conference with 10.00 assists per set and senior libero
Hailey Erickson contributes 3.75 digs per set and is among the top 10 in the league in aces.
UC Davis (5-5) is led by Emily Allen with 2.84 kills and 3.03 digs per set and Mahalia White with 2.64 kills per set. Brianna Karsseboom adds 2.22 kills per set and Lauren Jackson blocks 1.73 attempts per set. Maddie Merlino averages 6.88 assists and Paloma Bowman averages 4.27 assists per set, while Malia Bolko anchors the Aggies' defense with 4.65 digs per set.
UTA (5-4) also has two players averaging more than three kills per set with Zhanelle Geathers (3.84) and Qlana Canete (3.09). Canete also averages 3.03 digs per set and the Mavericks are led defensively by Madelyn St. Germain's 3.48 digs per set. Kailyn Gilbreath paces the offense with 8.62 assists per set.
ASU (7-2) has won three-straight behind Oluoma Okaro's 4.78 kills and 2.91 digs per set, with Grier Hughes averaging 3.13 kills and Ivana Jeremic averaging 2.84 kills per set. Defensively, Halle Harker leads the Sun Devils 5.28 digs per set and Carmen Unzue averages 1.09 blocks per set.
HBU opens SLC action with three road matches in five days, beginning with McNeese Thursday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m., followed by Nicholls Saturday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m., then Central Arkansas Monday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m.
