HOUSTON – HBU heads a few minutes north on 59 to take on crosstown rival Rice in non-conference volleyball Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Tudor Fieldhouse.
The Huskies (7-1) were one win away from matching the 2007 team for the best start in the Division I era, before falling to Texas State Saturday. HBU is led by senior outside hitters
Bailey Banks and
Jessica Wooten, with Banks averaging 3.31 kills and 3.76 digs per set and Wooten averaging 3.03 kills and 3.83 digs per set. Senior middle blocker
Blair Gillard adds 2.29 kills per set and leads the Southland Conference with 1.39 blocks per set. Freshman setter
Abby Gargus averages 10.38 assists per set, while junior setter
Madison O'Brien averages 9.67. Senior libero
Hailey Erickson chips in with 3.61 digs per set.
Nicole Lennon leads Rice (6-4) with 3.51 kills along with 2.22 digs per set, with Seyvion Waggoner averaging 2.69 kills per set. Madison McDaniel paces the Owls with 11.03 assists per set and Lee Ann Cunningham anchors the defense with 5.19 digs per set.
Rice leads the all-time series against HBU, 9-0.
The Huskies play their final tournament this weekend before beginning SLC play. HBU will be at the UT Arlington Maverick Classic, facing UC Davis and host UTA Friday, followed by Arizona State Saturday.
