BEAUMONT, Texas – On Friday evening at the Lamar Softball Complex, the HBU softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the Lamar Cardinals by scores of 12-6 and 4-2.
Game 1
HBU (7-11, 0-5 SLC) got the scoring started in the top of the first when
Nicole Shedd drove a two-out single through the left side to score
Heidi Jaquez who reached on a triple.
Libby Brown led off the third with a single before stealing second. Jaquez, the next batter, singled to left and after a double-steal, the Huskies had runners on second and third with no outs. Four batters later, with the bases loaded and two outs,
Cecilia Bauer drove home another run with a single through the left side for a 2-0 HBU lead.
The Cardinals (12-13, 5-0 SLC) got on the board in the bottom of the third thanks to RBI singles from Brittany Rodriguez and Brynn Baca to tie the game at 2-2. In the HBU half of the fourth, back-to-back two-out doubles off the bats of
Demi Janak and
Nicole Shedd gave the Huskies a three-spot and a 5-2 lead.
A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth brought the score to 5-3 before Lamar took advantage of two Husky errors in the fifth to push three runs across and take a 6-5 lead. Brown drew a one-out walk in the sixth for HBU and then scored when Jaquez stroked her second triple of the game to tie things at 6-6.
The Cardinals erupted in the bottom of the sixth to chase starting pitcher
Emily Mueller from the game and plate six runs on five hits for the 12-6 final.
Mueller took the loss in the circle for the Huskies, allowing 10 runs, seven earned, in five and a third innings.
Jaquez was 3-for-4 at the plate with two triples with a pair of runs scored and one run batted in. Shedd went 2-for-4, driving in three runs with a double, while Brown scored three runs, going 1-for-2 at the plate.
In their first 16 games, the Huskies recorded three stolen bases but in game one against the Cardinals, HBU picked up four steals.
Game 2
The Cardinals manufactured a run in the bottom of the first with a leadoff bunt single, a stolen base and a one-out double for an early 1-0 lead. Lamar then pushed two more runs across in the third on four hits.
Trailing 3-0 heading into the sixth, Janak was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before Shedd drew a walk to put two on with no outs. After a fielder's choice, a double to center by
Cecilia Bauer brough two runs across to cut the HBU deficit to one.
The Cardinals added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI groundout by Shelby Hughston.
Shae Bibby led off the HBU seventh with a single down the left field line before advancing to third as Jaquez reached on an error to put two on with one out. A strikeout and a line out ended the HBU threat and closed the game at 4-2.
Bauer was 2-for-3 in the second game with her third double of the season, driving in two runs. Buenrostro fell to 3-3 in the circle, allowing four earned runs on 12 hits.
HBU and Lamar will close out their three-game series on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at the LU Softball Complex.
