HOUSTON – The two hottest teams in the Southland Conference are set to meet on Wednesday when the HBU Huskies, winners of seven-straight, hosts the Islanders of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, winners of nine in-a-row, in Sharp Gym at 7:00 p.m. Fans can listen to the live audio broadcast via the Legacy Sports Network with Lonnie King providing the play-by-play at www.HBUHuskies.com.
The Huskies (15-12, 10-6 SLC) have won their last seven games and eight of the last nine with their only loss coming to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (18-9, 11-5 SLC) on February in Corpus Christi, Texas. HBU fell to the Islanders by a score of 90-79 with
Colter Lasher leading the Huskies, scoring 21 points to go along with five assists and five rebounds. Rashawn Thomas led the Islanders with 34 points on 13-of-19 shooting.
During the current seven-game win streak,
Josh Ibarra has led HBU in scoring with 15.1 points per game and has grabbed 9.3 rebounds per outing.
Reveal Chukwujekwu is averaging a double-double with 11.3 points and 10.1 boards per game. As a team over the last seven games, the Huskies are out-scoring their opponents by 10.3 points and own a +13.1 advantage in rebounds.
For the season, Lasher is pouring in 14.6 points per game to lead the Huskies. Ibarra and Chukwujekwu are both averaging double-digits per game with scoring averages of 12 and 11.5, respectively. The combination of Ibarra and Chukwujekwu also combine to average 15.6 rebounds per game between the two of them.
For the Islanders, Thomas leads the conference in both scoring, with 21.3 points per game, and rebounding, averaging 8.8 per contest. Ehab Amin, a junior guard, leads the nation in steals per game with a 3.41 average.
With two regular season games remaining, HBU is in fourth place but sits just a game out of second and two games behind first place New Orleans. The Islanders are tied for second with defending champion Stephen F. Austin.
HBU closes out the regular season this Saturday, March 4, when the Huskies host Abilene Christian at 7:00 p.m. as the second game of a double-header with the women. HBU will honor its seniors prior to the start of the game.
