HOUSTON – A pair of seniors led the way for HBU on Wednesday afternoon as
Emily Mueller threw six shutout innings while
Cecilia Bauer homered and drove in three runs in the Huskies' 6-3 victory of Texas Southern at Husky Field.
The Huskies (4-4) got the scoring started in the bottom of the first when a one-out, bases-loaded walk to
Kassie James brought
Heidi Jaquez home to make it 1-0. Two batters later, Bauer reached on an infield single with two outs that scored
Demi Janak from third.
HBU maintained its two-run lead into the fourth inning when
Libby Brown and Jaquez reached on back-to-back singles. Two wild pitches later, Brown crossed the plate to push the lead to 3-0.
Nicole Shedd drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fifth, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by James. With two outs and a 1-2 count, Bauer drove her first home run of the season over the left field wall to extend the Husky lead to 5-0.
In the sixth, freshman
Amber Lotz led off with a bunt single and then advanced around to third on a pair of wild pitches. After a Brown fly out, Jaquez collected her third hit of the game, a double to center, that scored Lotz and gave HBU its' sixth run.
After six shutout innings by Mueller,
Brooke Bushman came on to pitch in the seventh and after allowing a leadoff single and walk. The Huskies turned a double play on the following batter with a fly out to right and the lead baserunner caught at second. After the second walk of the inning put two runners on, TSU's (3-2) Dominique Tello connected for a pinch hit, three-run home run to put the Lady Tigers on the board. Bushman then ended the game by inducing a groundout to short.
Mueller earned the win in the circle, moving to 2-2 on the season. The senior scattered five hits over six innings and didn't allow a Lady Tiger baserunner past second base. She struck out three and walked one.
Jaquez went 3-for-4 with a double, one run scored and one run driven in, raising her season average to a team-leading .407. Now just eight games into her collegiate career, the freshman catcher already has three multi-hit games.
Bauer, now hitting .381 for the season and leading the team in slugging after her home run, was 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI and a run scored.
The Huskies and Lady Tigers will meet one more time this season, on Tuesday, Mar. 28, at Memorial Park with a 3:00 p.m. start time.
