MOBILE, Ala. – HBU softball lost its first game of the year on Saturday afternoon at Jaguar Stadium, falling 6-1 to the hosts, South Alabama.
The Jaguars (3-0), playing as the visitor due to tournament play, got the scoring started in the top of the third with a little two-out magic. Getting back-to-back home runs, the first of which brought in two runs, by Amanda Minahan and Abby Krzywiecki. Armed with a three-run lead, South Alabama added three more in the fourth, including two with two outs to put HBU (2-1) in a 6-0 hole the four and a half inning.
The Huskies got their lone run across in the bottom of the sixth when
Nicole Shedd led off with an infield single followed by a fielder's choice from
Kassie James that resulted in an error and runners on first and third. The next batter,
Megan Hiers grounded out to third, allowing Shedd to score from third on the throw.
As a team, HBU finished with four hits and no errors. Shedd was the sole Husky with multiple hits in the contest, going 2-for-3 with a double and one run scored. Hiers was 1-for-3 with one RBI and
Cecilia Bauer had the other hit for HBU.
Shae Bibby (0-1) took the loss in the circle for HBU, giving up five earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts and a walk in three innings.
Emily Mueller pitched the final four frames, allowing one earned run on three hits.
The Husky play their final game of the Sand Dollar Classic in Mobile, Ala. on Sunday against Jacksonville State at 12:30 p.m.
