NACOGDOCHES, Texas – HBU's senior linebacker duo of
Garrett Dolan and
Cody Moncure had standout performances, but the Huskies' offense was stifled as SFA pulled away for a 27-10 victory in Southland Conference football Saturday afternoon at Homer Bryce Stadium.
Dolan tied his own school record with 19 tackles, while Moncure had seven tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery for HBU (1-6, 0-5 SLC). Junior cornerback
Raphael Lewis added 12 tackles and sophomore safety
Nicholas Smith had nine. Senior defensive end
Taaron Timmons and junior linebacker
Kyle Bowling joined Moncure seven tackles.
Redshirt freshman quarterback
Andrew Haidet completed 4-of-11 passes for 70 yards, rushed for 15 yards and scored the Huskies' lone touchdown on a one-yard plunge. After Haidet left the game in the first quarter with an injury, sophomore
Jack Swensen completed 4-of-7 passes. True freshman
Bailey Zappe played the entire second half and went 15-for-24 for 146 yards and threw an interception. Freshman receiver
Dennis Houston made six catches for 69 yards and senior
Isaiah Hall made four catches for 58 yards.
Jake Blumrick completed 24-of-34 passes for 221 yards and an interceptions for SFA (3-5, 3-2). Kijana Amous rushed 16 times for 83 yards and two touchdowns and added seven receptions for 102 yards. Juan Day rushed seven times for 72 yards and a touchdown, while Tamrick Pace made five catches for 38 yards.
Aaron Foy led the Lumberjacks with seven tackles and had an interception. Trenton Gordon made six stops, while Teddy Britton and Spencer Choka had five apiece.
The Huskies took the opening kickoff and marched down the field for a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead. A 35-yard completion from Haidet to senior wide receiver Ethan Fry down to the 1-yard line set up Haidet's sneak into the endzone. In the second quarter, HBU blocked a field goal attempt, but couldn't capitalize on the offensive end. Moncure intercepted a pass and returned it to the SFA 36, but the Huskies couldn't move the ball and junior kicker
Alec Chadwick's 53-yard field goal attempt just missed right.
Storm Ruiz hit field goals from 34 and 24 yards out to get SFA on the board in the second quarter and cut HBU's lead to one. The Lumberjacks put together a drive just before halftime, with a 22-yard run by Day setting up his four-yard touchdown run to give SFA a 13-7 lead.
SFA opened the second-half scoring on a three-yard touchdown run by Amous. After a muffed punt by SFA was recovered by senior safety
Taylor Thompson at the Lumberjacks' 6-yard line, the Huskies settled for a 23-yard field goal by Chadwick to make the score 20-10 headaing into the fourth quarter.
The Huskies were driving early in the period, when Zappe hit Houston for three-straight completions. Zappe tried to find Fry in the endzone, but was intercepted by Foy. HBU stopped SFA, but a personal foul for roughing the punter kept the drive alive. A 35-yard run by Day down to the HBU 6 was followed by another touchdown run by Amous.
The Huskies host Northwestern State on Homecoming Saturday, Oct. 28, at 6 p.m. at Husky Stadium.
