HOUSTON – One goal was enough for the HBU Huskies to rack up their first win of the season thanks to
Malik Key in the 72
nd minute, 1-0, at Sorrels Field. The game was delayed by thirty minutes due to lightening in the area but was in the clear the rest of the night.
"Boys worked hard today against a very scrappy team. I felt we were in control of the game for the majority of the match, we just needed to continue to stay focused. We had some great chances in the first half that saw their keeper making three big saves. The second half we had even more of the ball and a lot more looks at the goal. We stayed patient and just continued to get numbers forward. It finally paid off and the boys scored a great goal," head coach
Steve Jones expressed after the win.
A ball struck by freshman forward
Malik Key into the bottom right corner of Huston-Tillotson's goal was enough to lift the Huskies (1-1-1) to victory. The ball originally came from junior midfielder Marc-Anthone to sophomore defender
Juan Vega who finally crossed from the right to find Key's foot. Sophomore midfielder
Darrell Johnson had two of the huskies six shots on goal while sophomore goalkeeper
Chance Pope was on the other end of the field required to make two saves to keep the shutout.
Jesse Solache did the offensive work for Huston-Tillotson (0-1-0) recording both of the team's shots on goal. Jose Ibarra was required to make five saves including an upper 90 save off of a free kick 22 yards out from the foot of
Darrell Johnson but still took the loss due to allowing the winning goal.
"I'm very proud of the boys tonight,"
Steve Jones said. "They worked hard and it paid off. The defense was solid all game and our offense was getting great looks at their goal. It's great to see the things we work on in practice come out in the game. Hopefully we can continue to build on tonight's efforts and success."
The Huskies will go on the road to take on Presbyterian in Edinburg, Texas on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and Friday will travel to Conway, Arkansas to take on Central Arkansas at 8 p.m.
