MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Memphis broke a scorless tie in the 35
th minute, then added a pair of second-half goals in 3-0 win over HBU in the Huskies' final non-conference match of the season.
Lucas de Paula took five shots, three on goal, for HBU (2-4-1), while sophomore Brian Brody, junior midfielder Marc-Anthone and freshman Martin each had one. Sophomore goalkeeper
Chance Pope played all 90 minutes, making four saves, with the three goals against.
Burke Fahling scored his first goal of the season for the Tigers (5-3), while Julio Vargas and Carlos Hurtado each came off the bench to tally a goal and an assist. Goalkeeper Jake Leeker played 77 minutes, facing eight shots and making three saves, while Erik Furseth finished the match, seeing one shot, which was not on goal.
Memphis outshot HBU, 20-9, with seven on goal to the Huskies' three. The Tigers also held the advantage on corner kicks, 6-3.
Fahling scored from long range after a cleared free kick to put Memphis ahead 1-0, a lead it would carry into the intermission.
In the second half, Hurtado found Vargas on a corner kick for his second goal of the season. Two-and-a-half minutes later, Vargas, along with Josh Burnett, returned the favor, assisting on Hurtado's first strike of the year for the match's final margin.
HBU will have 12 days off before beginning Western Athletic Conference play against Air Force at home on Sept. 30.
