MSOC: HBU Drops Season Opener to Ga. Southern

Juan Vega scores goal for the Huskies

Box Score

HOUSTON, Texas – HBU scored an early goal, but Georgia Southern had all of the offense the rest of the way in a 4-1 victory over the Huskies in the season opener at the Marriott Houston Westchase Invitaitonal Friday night at Sorrels Field.

Sophomore goalkeeper Chance Pope earned the start and made four saves during the game for HBU (0-1-0). Sophomore defender Juan Vega aggressively scored a goal in the 30th minute of the game. Senior forward Brandon Smith and Sophomore midfielder Josue Palomino each contributed a shot attempt adding to the team total of five.

The Eagles (1-0-0) started with an early goal by Sander Wang, assisted by Thor. Blake Wilson then added three more goals with the last scored in the 50th minute. Both Duncan and Thor tallied an assist for the game.

"It was a tough game. Unfortunately, we gave up too many set pieces. We allowed them to get in a lot of corners and a lot of looks down in our goal, box area. That makes us have to play a very defensive game. We will get better at putting our shots on frame. With such a young team, we have some work to do. Moving forward we will work on defending set pieces, and use such opportunities to move to score. There are some great things out of some of the players and we will continue to build on that. Once we regroup tomorrow and work on some areas, we be ready to go on Sunday" mentioned HBU head coach Steve Jones.

The Huskies will continue their homestand facing Fairfield Sunday at 7 p.m., followed by Hutson-Tilltson Friday at 7 p.m.
