KATY, Texas – The HBU men's basketball team will make their first appearance in the Southland Conference Tournament, playing in the quarterfinals in a 5 p.m. tip on Thursday. As the fourth seed, the Huskies will enjoy a first-round bye and play the winner of fifth-seeded Southeastern Louisiana and eighth-seeded New Orleans.
The tournament tilt will be broadcast on ESPN3 and ESPN College Extra (see channel guide below) with Lincoln Rose on the call and Jim Haller providing color, while the Legacy Sports Network with Lonnie King will carry the audio broadcast on HBUHuskies.com.
The Huskies (16-15, 10-8 SLC) are coming off a 97-86 loss at Incarnate Word on Saturday to close out the regular season. Up 74-73 with 7:31 to go, the Cardinals rode an 11-1 run to take a 85-74 advantage and then turned in a perfect 12-for-12 showing at the free throw line over the final two minutes to HBU its fourth straight loss.
The Huskies, who rank 23rd in the country in field goal percentage (.480), led the conference in the regular season in defensive rebounding (26.2), ranked second in field goal percentage and field goal percentage defense (.436), third in scoring (77.4 per game) and fourth in blocks (4.1 per game). In league play, sophomore
Josh Ibarra led all in field goal percentage (.686), while
Anthony Odunsi ranked third in scoring (20.0 per game). On the season, Ibarra led the SLC from the field (.631) and senior
Jourdan Stickler held the mark in 3-point field goal percentage (.459). Odunsi, who was third in the league in scoring (17.8 per game), ranks third at the NCAA Division I level in made free throws (229) and fifth in free throw attempts (274).
Two HBU players picked up All-SLC recognition on Monday, as Odunsi was named to the first team and Ibarra was tabbed honorable mention. Odunsi's first-team honor is the first for the program since the Huskies joined the league prior to the 2013-14 season.
Freshman
Isaiah Robinson is third in the SLC in blocks (2.1 per game), sitting seventh in the country among all freshman and 42nd overall. He is also tied for 19th among freshman with 49 total blocks.
Southeastern Louisiana and New Orleans will meet in the opening game of the SLC Tournament in a 5 p.m. tip on Wednesday. The two teams join HBU on the same side of the bracket as No. 1 Stephen F. Austin, while the other side of the bracket includes No. 2 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, No. 3 Sam Houston State, No. 6 McNeese State and No. 7 Nicholls.
HBU students will get free admittance with the presentation of their student ID.
