HOUSTON – HBU shot over 70 percent from the field in the second half to pull away from Arlington Baptist in a 103-77 victory on Saturday night at Sharp Gym.
The Patriots (7-8) came out shooting red-hot, connecting on 13 of their first 17 shots and building a 22-12 lead nine minutes into the game. HBU (4-5) began to trim the deficit and, aside from an early 2-1 advantage, took the lead for good on a
Jalon Gates three with 3:43 left to play in the half and went into halftime leading 47-44. Arlington Baptist shot 69.2 percent in the half, including 66.7 percent from deep.
In the second stanza, the Huskies built their lead to 10 less than five minutes in and used an eight-point burst near the midway point of the half to extend the lead to 88-67. After a
Josh Ibarra tip-in with 6:33 on the clock, HBU maintained at least a 20 point lead the rest of the way. The Huskies knocked down 24 of 34 shots and held the Patriots to just six rebounds in the second half.
Senior
Colter Lasher led all players and matched a career-high with 28 points on 12-18 shooting, edging out Arlington Baptist's Cedric Carson who finished the game with 27 points.
Reveal Chukwujekwu posted a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds, both career-highs for the senior. He also added four assists.
Braxton Bonds, a sophomore, dished out a career-best seven assists, along with eight points, without a turnover to bring his season assist to turnover ratio to 2.31. Ibarra added 13 points and six rebounds for the Huskies while also recording a season-best three blocked shots. Senior
Alex Fountain, who walked the stage at graduation earlier in the day, was 2-2 from beyond the arc and 4-5 from the floor for 10 points while
Jalen Weber was a perfect 4-4 for nine points.
The Huskies shot 60.6 percent for the game while Arlington Baptist hit 51.7 percent. HBU held a 38-21 advantage on the boards and forced the Patriots into 16 turnovers but committed just 10.
HBU heads to Evanston, Ill. for its final non-conference road game before Southland Conference play begins, facing Big Ten foe Northwestern on Thursday, Dec. 22 at 7:00 p.m. on Big Ten Network Plus.
