BAKERSFIELD, California - A set piece goal ended HBU soccer's season as CSU Bakersfield took the sixth-seed slot for the Western Athletic Conference Tournament with a 1-0 victory for the final regular-season match on Saturday night at Main Soccer Field.
Â
"The boys played some good soccer tonight," head coach
Steve Jones said. "I don't think we deserved to lose. We created some great attacking moments and had a lot of the ball for most of the game, just couldn't find the net. I'm proud of the way the boys fought tonight. I wish for the seniors that we could have extended their season and will miss them. We have a young team returning and will look forward to seeing them grow into a very special group of players."
Â
The Huskies (5-11-1, 3-7-0 WAC) started fast-paced and held possession well as they connected passes and were patient to attack the Roadrunners (6-12-0, 4-6-0 WAC) defense. HBU had great crosses, but there were only defenders in the area as the ball easily changed possession. CSU Bakersfield looked to take the lead in the 22
nd minute of the match as a Roadrunner player was not shy by striking it over 25 yards out, but missed wide left resulting in a Husky goal kick. Four minutes later, the Huskies had a quick counter off of a defending corner, but could not get past the Roadrunners defense. Two minutes left until half time, CSU Bakersfield was awarded a free kick 25 yards out. Louis Lapouge took initiative and curled the ball past the wall of Huskies. The ball went past diving sophomore goalkeeper
Chance Pope and entered just inside of the right post to give the Roadrunners the lead going into half.
Â
Ten minutes into the second half, the Huskies were awarded a free kick just a few yards away from the left corner. Sophomore defender
Devon Grant won the ball in the air as he got a head to it, but missed the goal wide left. One minute later, the Roadrunners had the same free kick on their right side after a quick counter attack from a goal kick. This time, the player hit it on the ground and was eventually picked up by Pope. In the 66
th minute, Pope had a reaction save after a Roadrunner took the ball off of a Husky mistouch. The Huskies had a prime opportunity in the 69
th minute as a ball was crossed in from the right end line and the ball ended up at the top of the box after a scramble and sophomore midfielder
Darrell Johnson struck the ball, but it went wide left. With eight minutes left in the second half, the Huskies had back-to-back corners, but could not capitalize on the opportunities. The Huskies could not find a way to find the back of the net before regulation ended.
Â
The Huskies ended the game with two shots on goal, one by freshman defender
Khalil Thomas and the other by Johnson. Pope was between the pipes for the Huskies and had four saves on the night with one goal against.
Â
CSU Bakersfield had Niklas Koerber lead them with three shots on goal and had Lapouge round out the other two shots on goal for the Roadrunners total of five. Nicolas Clever took home the win in goal as he was asked to make two saves and earned the shutout.
