MBB: First Half the Difference as HBU Falls to Marquette

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – On Saturday evening at the BMO Harris Bradley Center, the HBU men's basketball team dropped a 101-79 decision on the road to Marquette with a 32-14 run at the end of the first half putting the game out of the Huskies' reach.
 
Five HBU (2-3) players reached double-digits in scoring with junior Josh Ibarra and sophomore Asa Cantwell leading the way with 12 each. Cantwell was 4-6 from three-point range while Ibarra was 6-10 from the field. Colter Lasher added 11 for the Huskies and dished out a team-high six assists while also recording a pair of steals. Alex Fountain ended the night with 11 points off the bench and Reveal Chukwujekwu posted 10 points and eight boards.
 
For Marquette (4-2), Luke Fischer put up a double-double with 22 points and a game-high 11 rebounds on a near-perfect 9-10 shooting while Jajuan Johnson added 22 off the bench. Haanif Cheatham finished the game with 21 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
 
The Golden Eagles took an early lead and pushed it to eight with 16:09 on the clock. HBU kept things under that and a Jalen Weber three at the 11:39 mark brought the Huskies to within 24-19. Throughout the rest of the first stanza, Marquette out-scored the Huskies 32-14 for a 56-33 halftime lead.
 
HBU came out in the second half and cut its deficit to 18 thanks to a Lasher three-pointer 3:23 into the half. An 8-0 run by the Huskies concluded on a bucket from Ibarra to pull HBU within 17 with 8:38 to go. HBU would get no closer the rest of the way. The Huskies out-scored Marquette 46-45 in the second half.
 
HBU finished the night shooting 42.3 percent from the floor and 47.6 percent from long distance while the Golden Eagles connected on 56.1 percent of their shots. Marquette held a 41-31 advantage on the boards and out-scored the Huskies 46-26 in the paint. HBU turned 12 offensive rebounds into 20 second chance points.
 
The Huskies return to Houston for their next two games. First up is crosstown rival Rice on Wednesday, November 30, at Tudor Fieldhouse with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m. The following Wednesday, December 7, HBU will host St. Peter's in Sharp Gym at 7:00 p.m.
