Jourdan Stickler hit six 3-pointers and turned in a career-high 22 points, as the HBU men's basketball team strolled to a 109-84 victory against Hillsdale Baptist in their non-conference finale on Monday night inside Sharp Gym.
Stickler finished 6-for-6 from beyond the arc for the Huskies (13-7), tying the program's mark for 3-point field goal percentage with a perfect 1.000 efficiency. The native of Annapolis, Maryland, joined Baron Sauls, who turned in a 6-for-6 performance at Villanova on Dec. 4, 2008. Overall, Stickler finished 8-for-10 from the field against Hillsdale (10-9).
Stckler was one of seven HBU players to record double figures, joined by
Colter Lasher (16),
Alex Fountain (14),
Caleb Crayton (12),
Isaiah Robinson (12),
Reveal Chukwujekwu (11) and
Trey Patterson (10). Lasher also led all with nine rebounds, while Patterson distributed a career-high eight assists and Robinson issued three blocks.
With the win, the Huskies pick up their ninth straight victory and improve to 9-0 at home for the first time since the 2006-07 season, HBU's final NAIA season before transferring back to the NCAA Division I level. The Huskies also eclipse the 100-point threshold for a fourth time both on the season and against a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association.
HBU shot season-high 63.1 percent (41-65) from the field, 57.1 percent (12-21) from 3-point land and 75.0 percent (15-20) at the line. The Huskies outscored Hillsdale 50-10 in the paint and 15-4 off turnovers.
The Saints' Adam Morales, who finished with 21 points, hit two quick threes in the opening minute to force HBU to play from behind in the early going. However, Lasher hit his first four shots, including two hits from deep, as the Huskies tied the game at 10-all less than two minutes later.
Down 13-12 at 16:43, Chukwujekwu ignited a 10-0 surge with a dunk and Stickler hit his first two 3-pointers of the game to put HBU on top for good.
Hillsdale made several pushes over the remainder of the first half and found itself in striking distance at 37-35 with just under five minutes left in the half. However, the Huskies thwarted the comeback and closed on a closed on a 9-0 run to enter the break up 46-35.
HBU outscored the Saints 63-49 in the second half.
The Huskies return to Southland Conference play and host Sam Houston State in a "Retro Night" on Saturday, as the team will wear its uniform look from the 1970s. Fans are encouraged to join in their throwback garb as well.
Postgame Quotes – Head Coach Ron CottrellOpening comments…"Tonight was exactly what we anticipated. I tried to relate to the team coming into tonight and yesterday at practice, but we just didn't do a good job of guarding the 3-point line. We did do enough good things to certainly win the game though. Jourdan Stickler's shooting is at the top of that list. But whenever you win a home non-conference game in the middle of conference play and had a good crowd in attendance, it is certainly something to be happy about." On Jourdan Stickler's 3-point shooting…"I told him after the game how proud I was of him. He got in a rhythm and helped us take a lead there in the first half. He shot the ball great all night." On Saturday's game against Sam Houston State…"We need all our fans out on Saturday night, because it is a big game for us. We know Sam Houston State is going to bring a lot of fans, but we want Sharp Gym filled with HBU people." Senior Jourdan SticklerOn tying school's 3-point field goal percentage record…"I am just thankful that tonight the shots were falling. I wanted to be aggressive and my teammates put me in good positions to take shots."
