Trae Riek carried 12 times for 75 yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for 50 yards for the Bears (2-0), while Anthony Davis added 53 yards rushing and a touchdown. Jacob Knipp completed 8-of-12 passes for 77 yards and a touchdown, and Jonathan Newsom completed 5-of-11 for 73 yards. Stephen Miller caught three passes for 35 yards and a touchdown.
Taylor Risner made 16 tackles for UNC, while AJ Isenburg recorded 10. Tyler Bloyer made an interception, while Khairi Bailey and Mikhail Dubose each recovered fumbles.
UNC took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter, as Newsom's 42-yard pass to Riek set up a four-yard scoring run by Newsom. On HBU's ensuing possession, the Huskies turned the ball over on downs inside their own territory, but the Bears missed a 45-yard field goal.
HBU went 57 yards in 12 plays, highlighted by Staver's 18-yard completion to junior
Ricardo Barnett and a 15-yard burst by Kelly. The drive was capped by senior
Travis Shinn's 32-yard field goal with 5:30 to go to make the score 6-3.
Each defense stiffened in the second quarter, but Ellis Onic returned a punt 71 yards for a touchdown just before halftime to give the Bears a 13-3 lead at the break.
UNC scored twice in the third quarter on Knipp's 19-yard pass to Miller with 9:01 remaining and a three-yard run by Riek with 5:26 to go.
In the fourth quarter, Staver found Fry for a 19-yard touchdown to get the Huskies within 27-10 with 11:15 left, but the Bears answered with Davis's 36-yard touchdown run with 6:50 on the clock.
The Huskies return to action when they begin Southland Conference play on the road against Abilene Christian Saturday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene, Texas.
