HOUSTON – The exhibition men's soccer match between HBU and St. Edward's was cancelled due to lightning Sunday afternoon from the HBU Practice Field.
The two teams were about to hit the pitch to begin the second half when Mother Nature had other plans. HBU was leading the Hilltoppers, 2-0.
The Huskies nearly got on the board with a beautiful sliding goal by
Brandon Smith, but the play was ruled offside.
Thilo Borgmann scored in the 25th minute on a beautiful goal that beat Hilltopper goalkeeper, Kevin Leib, just under the crossbar to give HBU a 1-0 lead.
George Kelley gave the Huskies a 2-0 advantage nine minutes later, as he beat his defender and was one-on-one with Leib, as he snuck the ball past the goalkeeper for an individual effort.
HBU outshot St. Edward's, 7-5, in the first half, while the Hilltoppers had all seven of the half's corner kicks.
Philip Poser made two saves, while Leib made three.
HBU opens the regular season next Friday, Aug. 28 against Lubbock Christian at Sorrels Field. The match is part of a doubleheader with the women's team and kickoff is scheduled for a 7:30 pm start.
