HOUSTON – Behind senior
George Kelley's five-point night, HBU defeated St. Thomas, 5-1, in an exhibition match Thursday night at Awty International School.
Kelley scored two goals – including the game winner – and added an assist to lead all players.
Sebastian Henke,
Dominick Faletto, and
Kameron Maney also scored.
Philip Poser earned the win in goal as he made one save in the first half.
Chance Pope stopped two shots and allowed a goal in the second half in his first collegiate appearance.
Oscar Zamudio scored for St. Thomas, while Diego Pinto had a team-best three shots. Sebastian Santos and Jorge Roa each made two saves, as Santos allowed four first-half goals in the losing effort.
HBU drew first blood in the 24th minute, as Kelley sent a forward pass to
Devon Grant. Grant sent in a centering pass to Faletto who beat keeper Santos top shelf.
HBU scored two goals eight minutes apart, as Kelley gave the Huskies a 2-0 lead as he scored on a giveaway and was one-on-one with Santos. Kelley later scored on a penalty kick.
The Huskies weren't done as Henke scored a beautiful goal with 15 seconds left in the half off a corner kicks. Borgmann sent the ball in and Henke headed the ball that hit the inside of the cross bar.
St. Thomas got on the board in the 86th minute as Zamudio won a challenge and headed the ball past Pope. The final goal of the night came with two seconds left in regulation on HBU's 10th corner of the night.
Augustine Ifebi took the in-bounds and Maney headed the ball past Roa for a 5-1 lead.
HBU hosts St. Edward's Sunday at 4:30 pm in the final preseason match, tentatively set for Sorrels Field.
