TULSA, Okla. – In less than 48 hours, the HBU men's soccer team played their second double overtime match, but tonight's result was different as
Gustavo Alvarado's goal in the 108th minute gave the Huskies a thrilling 2-1 victory over host Oral Roberts Monday evening from the Case Soccer Complex.
HBU drew first blood as
Tobenna Uzo scored his second goal in as many matches, as his tally came in the 15th minute, assisted by
Patrick Toh. ORU's Alex White' s shot was blocked by Toh, who fed the ball to a streaking Uzo, who went on a breakaway and shot from 18 yards out.
The teams entered halftime with the Huskies still leading 1-0. ORU outshot the Huskies in the first half, 7-6, and edged the Huskies, 2-1, in corner kicks.
The Golden Eagles tied the match at one in the 65th minute, as Clive Chafausipo scored, assisted by Wayne Farmer. Farmer's shot hit the right post and the rebound went right to Chafausipo, who scored into an open net.
Neither team could get the upper hand for the final 25 minutes and the two teams entered overtime. ORU had two corner kicks in a span of four minutes late in regulation, but the Huskies got out of the jam both times.
It was all HBU in the first overtime session, as the Huskies had five shot opportunities, with one save and two blocks.
The Huskies finally broke through in the 108th minute with Alvarado's heroics.
George Kelley improved to 1-1-0 in goal, as he made one save. His counterpart, Ben LaCourse, made five saves as he dropped to 0-2-0. HBU outshot ORU, 25-17, while ORU had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
HBU (1-1-0) will head back on the road to play at Butler and at IUPUI on Sept. 9 and 11, respectively.
