Box Score
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – It was a total team effort in the HBU men's soccer team's 2-1 win at IUPUI Wednesday evening at Michael A Carroll Stadium. Charlie Gagnon and Stefan Lamanna each scored for the Huskies and George Kelley made a career-high six saves in goal.
Kelley made his first save just five minutes into the match, as the Jaguars put the pressure on early. They had two blocked shots and a pair of shots go wide.
But it would be the Huskies who would strike first, as Gagnon scored, assisted by Kyle Herbison in the 41st minute. Awarded a corner kick, Herbison put the ball in play and Gagnon banged it home for his first tally of the season.
IUPUI tried desperately to tie the match before halftime, but Kelley denied the Jaguars, saving Patrick Henry's shot, which resulted in a corner kick. He then saved a header attempt by Clint Hoffar just before the buzzer sounded to end the half.
IUPUI outshot HBU 11-5 in the first half, while HBU had five corner kicks to the Jaguars' two.
It was the Huskies who put the pressure on to begin the second half, as HBU was awarded a corner kick just four minutes into the second session. IUPUI goalkeeper Eduardo Cortes made two saves and Kristopher Tyrpak hit the post all in a span of 50 seconds, but the score remained 1-0.
HBU increased its lead to 2-0 at the 68th minute, as Lamanna scored his first collegiate goal, assisted by Gustavo Alvarado, as Lamanna scored from eight yards out.
IUPUI wouldn't go away, as the Jaguars were awarded a corner kick in the 77th minute and took advantage. Evan Smith took the corner and Michael Sass headed the ball in the back of the net to make the score 2-1 with 13 minutes left in regulation.
HBU tried to get the two-goal lead back in the 83rd minute as the Huskies were awarded a corner kick, but Cortes saved Tyrpak's shot.
Then things became nerve-wracking. The Jaguars were awarded a corner kick in the 85th minute, Christian Soto's shot was stopped by Kelley in the 88th minute, and Cole Walker's shot went high at the 88:42-mark. With just 13 seconds remaining in regulation, Hoffar's shot was deflected wide, resulting in a corner kick. With under five seconds left, Hoffar took the kick, but Evan Smith's shot went just wide left and the Huskies held on for the win.
Kelley earned his second win of the season as he made six saves. Cortes took the loss in net for IUPUI, as he made three saves. IUPUI outshot HBU 18-15 in the match.
HBU (2-2-0) will remain on the road and head for the Big Apple to play at LIU Brooklyn on Sept. 20 at 5 pm CST and Army on Sept. 22 at 12 pm CST.
