Tyrpak and Munoz Post-Match Interview (video)
HOUSTON –
Leonel Munoz scored the first two goals of the match and
Kristopher Tyrpak had a three-point match as Houston Baptist upset MPSF-leading Air Force, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Sorrels Field.
Air Force had come into Houston this afternoon with a lot of momentum, having upset fifth-ranked New Mexico in Albuquerque two days earlier, 1-0 in overtime.
Air Force scored the game's first goal in the 20th minute, as Garrett Getschow scored, assisted by Eric Tise. Tise sent a long pass up the field and Getschow one-touched it, lobbing it over keeper
Zach Harwerth.
HBU tied the match 19 minutes later, in the 39th minute, as Munoz scored his first of the match, assisted by Tyrpak. Tyrpak sent a backwards pass, using the heel of his foot to send the ball to Munoz, who went up the left side. His shot went underneath keeper Matt Underwood's left arm into the lower right corner of the net.
HBU scored twice in a 10-minute span in the second half. The duo of Munoz and Tyrpak struck again in the 59th minute, as there was a lot of commotion inside the box. Tyrpak crossed the ball into the center of the box and Munoz kicked the ball into the back of the net.
In the 69th minute, following an Air Force foul,
Mark Gendi took the free kick. He sent a gorgeous pass into the box and Tyrpak came from the left side, flying through the box and heading the ball into the net for a 3-1 Husky lead.
The Falcons tried to come back, scoring a goal in the 81st minute to make the score 3-2. Tise scored, assisted by Alex Frazier.
HBU outshot Air Force 12-11 in the match and each team had four corner kicks.
Harwerth earned the win in goal for HBU, making one save. Underwood suffered his first conference loss for Air Force, making four saves.
HBU (3-5-1, 1-1-1 MPSF) will head to Colorado next weekend to play Denver and Air Force.
