DALLAS, Texas – The Houston Baptist men's soccer team began its 2011 season with a 4-0 loss at #5 SMU in an exhibition match on a sweltering Wednesday evening at Westcott Field.
SMU is ranked fifth in the nation entering this season, after earning a spot in the Elite Eight. The Mustangs lost to North Carolina in penalty kicks after tying the Tar Heels 1-1 in double overtime.
The two teams were deadlocked at zero when SMU broke the tie in the 26th minute, when Zach Barnes scored, assisted by Juan Castillo. Barnes scored from eight yards out on a give-and-go with Castillo.
The Huskies had a golden opportunity to tie the match at one, but
John McDuffee's shot hit the post.
The Mustangs increased their lead to 2-0 in the 42
nd minute, when Castillo's shot went past the soaring
Daniel Boyer into the net. The goal was assisted by Robbie Derschang.
SMU made it 3-0 in the 63rd minute as Damian Rosales scored. The Mustangs finished their scoring as Edu Aranda scored in the 82nd minute. HBU goalkeeper Boyer made the initial save, but Aranda scooped up the rebound and banged it home.
Boyer played all 90 minutes in goal and made eight saves, several on point-blank shots, while allowing four goals.
Castillo led SMU with three shots, all on goal, with one goal and one assist.
Jaime Ibarra started the match and made two saves in 45 minutes. Devin Cook played the second half and also made two saves.
HBU will conclude the preseason hosting St. Edward's on Saturday, Aug. 20 at 7 pm.
